Horizons is Waubonsee Community College's literary magazine.  

We are currently collecting submissions for The Skyway Writers Festival and Competition 2025

Submission Guidelines:

  • Each poem is limited to 3 pages, submit each separately
  • Submit manuscript saved as a MS Word or PDF file.
  • Entries should have a standard font size of 10-12, and should have the title on the manuscript, but the manuscript should have NO personal identifiers (e.g. name of writer, email address).

By submitting my work for this contest I affirm that ALL of the following are true:

  1. I am an active student at Waubonsee Community College
  2. I have written the work submitted here while a student at Waubonsee during the Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Summer 2025, or Fall 2025 semesters.
  3. I have NOT submitted work to the Skyway Writers Competition for MORE THAN two (2) years in a row.
  4. I have NOT submitted this work for consideration in any other contest.
  5. Artificial Intelligence is in no way the author of this work.

All submissions for the Skyway Writers Competition will ALSO be considered for publication in Waubonsee’s literary magazine, Horizons.

  • By submitting my work for this contest I also give the following consent to Horizons literary magazine : I hereby consent to the use of my writing or visual artwork in the Horizons literary magazine, which is a publication of the Creative Writing Club and Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Waubonsee Community College (WCC). I understand that Horizons, and ultimately WCC, is requesting first serial publication rights for my writing or visual artwork that will revert to the author upon publication. I also understand that Horizons and WCC request internet and subsidiary rights to my work so that it may be permanently displayed on related Horizons and WCC websites for promotional and archival purposes and possible consideration in Horizons and WCC anthologies or other projects. In regards to written work, I agree to allow the editors of Horizons to fix basic grammatical errors without consent, but understand that any larger edits will only be made with my permission. In regards to visual artwork, I understand that any and all changes proposed by editors of Horizons may only be made with my permission. It is further understood and I agree that no monies or any other form of consideration is owed or will become due to me, my agents, heirs or assigns at any time because of the use of my writing, artwork or project. I have read the foregoing, understand it and voluntarily agree to it. I also understand that by agreeing to the following terms that I am giving permission to have my writing or visual work published in the Horizons literary magazine.

Contest Details:

  • Waubonsee’s finalists for the competition will be announced by email on October 10th.  The top three winners for each category will be announced at the Skyway Writers Festival (hosted by Prairie State Community College starting at 12:00pm) on Thursday, November 13th, which will include open-mic performances and workshops. Students from all Skyway colleges are welcome to attend.
